Seal Bay Nature Park is a spectacular Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) park protecting approximately 1,500 acres of maturing second growth forest. It was established in 1975 through regional lobbying efforts.
The naming of Melda’s Marsh and a cairn near Bates Road honours the contribution of Melda Buchanan, who played a key role. In 1990 local residents again rallied for conservation of the park from forest harvesting.
Two youth from Youth and Ecological Restoration (YER) will conduct ecological inventories in one of the conservation zones identified in the CVRD 2019 Seal Bay Park Management Plan. Biologist, Carrina Maslovat will lead the ecological research and provide a report. Barb Whyte, Elder, Traditional Knowledge Keeper and member of K’omoks First Nation will discuss some of the significance of plant species in her traditional territory with the youth.
This YER, Phase II project is made possible through a funding partnership between Ministry of Children and Family Development and CVRD, Community Services Branch. On August 11th at 12:00 the youth will share their acquired information during a public tour.
The tour will be about two hours in length and the trail has easy walking access. To find Seal Bay Park go up Hardy Road to the new parking lot, which is where the tour will start. We look forward to you joining us for the youth led public tour. FMI contact YER Coordinator, Wendy Kotilla at wkotilla@shaw.ca or 250-336-8487; visit the YER website at www.youthecology.ca.
